Bugs & Grubs Identification and How to Treat Them

So I'm here in Queensland today with obviously a pretty quick run into Chrissy. We're starting to get some afternoon storms, the temperatures are obviously elevated and it is the perfect environment for grubs, bugs, African black beetle, mole cricket, all sorts of pests that are out there and can invade your home lawn, especially when it's brand new. New lawns are always susceptible to lawn grub attack with the new shoots, new fibrous shoots. So I'm going to run you through a couple of tips this afternoon, some good indicators particularly for lawn grub. Some people call them army worms, both the same thing and ways to be able to identify them safely and be able to treat them as well. So a little something I prepared earlier, is a towel. Most people have got an area like this when they're starting to have a look at lawn grub. What you'll see is obviously an area that's back right off and then we'll start to see an area that's less healthy going into an area that is more healthy over here. What I would normally be looking for for lawn grubs more specifically is I'd be looking for runners like this one here and if I was seeing that that runner there was chewed all the way back to the stolen itself, I'd definitely be expecting lawn grubs. So another great way to identify them because they don't come out in the heat of the day, grab yourself a towel. Some people can also use bits of cardboard or heavy bits of paper and put them out on your backyard. And what we're looking to do is create ultimately a night time environment for them and we're just going to wet that towel up. And then what we're going to do from there is we're just going to give that 20mins to sit the cool environment underneath them, the dark environment underneath. We'll see those lawn grubs come to the surface, come out of the thatch and start to attack those leaves. If you haven't noticed anything under the wet towel, that's great news. You need to start looking at other reasons why that area might be lagging behind. In the case you have found army worm or curl grub or something else that's come up from underneath the thatched profile, it's definitely time to start treating. The Acelepryn is a great product because it's got three month and even out to six months residual in the ground. It's a zero chemical schedule so it's super safe on kids, pets, anything like that. But if you're wanting something really fast knockdown, if you've got funnel ants or something that's on footpaths, fire ants even, the Monarch G insecticide is also a great product as well. It's in a 2.5kg granular form so that's another excellent product as well to go out there and treat. It can also hit mole cricket and a whole host of other pests and diseases.
