A spreader is the difference between a fertiliser program that works and one that stripes. Getting the right one is mostly a question of how much lawn you have to cover in a single pass.

Which spreader for your lawn
Handheld broadcast spreader — a 2.5–3 kg hopper with an adjustable flow gate and a crank handle. Built for spot repairs, small lawns and getting product exactly where you want it. If you are patching a worn strip by the gate or treating one bad corner, this is the one you reach for.
8 kg push broadcast spreader — a 3-metre spread width that covers up to 1,000 m² in minutes, on the Scotts EasyGreen design. This is the standard choice for a typical suburban block: enough capacity to do the whole lawn without refilling, and a wide enough pass that you are not walking the yard twice.
Cordless battery spreader — an 18V lithium system with up to two hours of runtime, supplied with battery and charger. Worth the step up for larger lawns, acreage, or if you are doing several properties in a day and want consistent output without pushing.
What you can spread
All three handle granular fertilisers, granular insecticides and granular wetting agents. That covers most of a year's program — a controlled-release fertiliser through the growing season, a grub preventative when beetles are flying, and a wetting agent going into summer if your soil has started repelling water.
Calibrate it once and the rest is easy
An uncalibrated spreader is the most common reason a good fertiliser produces a patchy result: the setting on the dial is not a rate, it is just a gate opening, and the same number throws different amounts of different products. Calibrating takes about ten minutes and you only do it once per product.
