Nutgrass Treatment Application: Part 2

A couple of weeks ago we were in this backyard and we identified a small amount of nutgrass and as you can see that small amount after the application of fertiliser and wetting agent has certainly brought up more. And the reason why the nutgrass would be so prolific here and not on the rest of the backyard is there's no competition or very little competition. So as your lawn develops more health you'll see a lot less ingress of weeds and things like that and particularly in this case obviously nutgrass. Today we're going to treat the nutgrass that's here so we're going to use the ProSedge or the Halo-Force 750 product that's available on The Lawn IQ website and we're also going to use the Solo Eazy 206 as well. So we'll get into it but before we do I should make a comment that all of these products that are found on The Lawn IQ website are both dog and kid friendly and lucky today we've got our our mate Rossy chasing us around in the backyard as well. A way to be able to identify nutgrass is a couple of different things. They have a very waxy looking leaf for a start. Their stem is quite triangular and I'm not going to pull any out to show you because we're about to give it a spray. And then there's also another sedge variety of weed called the Mullumbimby couch which also has a little white flower that sits in the middle of the plant as well. And that's in comparison to the the buffalo that you can see over here where it has quite a wide rounded leaf at the top and an obvious spine at the back there whereas a nutgrass doesn't have that. We'll be able to demonstrate today pretty clearly how effective the ProSedge is and how protected your normal lawn and your buffalo in this particular case will be with the product. For a product like this where we really want it to sit on the leaf of the target weed we want to make sure that the particular weed is certainly above and easy to access with the spray. So in this case obviously the nutgrass is well above the canopy of the buffalo. Another tip as well particularly here in Southeast Queensland at the moment we're getting some pretty regular storms. So we want to make sure we're applying the product with a few days window before the next rain event. So making sure you're not mowing it, you're not going to be watering it and we're not going to be getting any storms in the next three or four days just to make sure the product sits on the leaf for as long as possible. The nozzle height you'll see them about 50cm above and the other thing is too just wanting to make sure when you're applying the product that it's not dripping from the leaf it's just a fine mist hitting the leaf and giving it an even coverage across bit hard on nutgrass to be able to show it properly because it already has a fairly waxy leaf.
