Seed or Weed Identification Tips

Just a quick one guys, we're just doing some mowing here this afternoon and I wanted to take the opportunity because it's a question I get asked all the time is what is this weed? So I want to point out what I'm talking about. So this guy here, so this weed here isn't actually a weed, it's the seed head from a buffalo grass. So certainly like we are doing here mowing, it's a great indicator to get in and get started with the mowing. So a bit of a life cycle you can see here, this is the early component just coming up with still a little bit of leaf and a seed coming through. Then we can see the seeds coming up a little bit further with the leaf still showing and then this here we can see where the seed head is going to flower there as well. So there's nothing you can do about it, it's just part of the way that the grass grows. Seed is a good indicator of stress. So stress at the moment, this time of year we've certainly seen a season change. It's much hotter, storms are coming in so we're seeing really warm days. So the grass will be throwing up seed head because of that. These are really obvious seed heads and it also gives you a good example of why buffalo lawns are low allergenic. They've got a really big heavy seed head and very few fine spikes or any of those hairs that can irritate young skin or even pets. So definitely keep them removed but certainly buffaloes are a low allergenic. Some other seed heads you'll see that are really common as well is Zoysia grasses. They have a purple seed head. It's very very low profile so they don't stick up like these guys here and they're very slim line, they stay in the stem but purple, super purple. And then the last ones that are really common are the couch seeds. So blue couch and green couch have a similar sort of seed. They're a very fine stalk. They then have like a telegraph pole at the top. They can have three or four prongs at the top coming out and that's where their seed heads can be found.
