Hugo Struss has been turf farming for seventeen years, in a family that has been doing it for nearly forty — home backyards, and professional sports fields where the difference between a good surface and a poor one is measured rather than argued about.
Day to day that means more than a thousand acres of turf, grown for stadiums, horse racing tracks and premier golf courses around the country. It is also where the product testing behind a Lawn IQ plan happened: NPK ratios, varieties, and what does and does not work, trialled on turf that gets inspected for a living.
That experience is where the plans on this site come from. Every product recommendation, application rate and timing window in a Lawn IQ plan reflects what was already being done by hand for individual lawns: match the program to the turf variety, the climate and the season, then apply it at the right rate at the right time.
He writes the guides in the Lawn IQ blog and appears in the video library, covering the things that decide whether a lawn recovers or keeps going backwards — watering depth, soil that has stopped absorbing water, spreader calibration, and getting pre-emergent down before weeds germinate rather than after.
The Lawn IQ exists because most lawn failures come down to the same few causes: the wrong product, the wrong timing, or no plan at all. The aim is to make the turf science behind the fix straightforward enough to follow without needing to become an agronomist yourself.
